PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
I will make SHPE the source of Professional Development Programs tailored to your needs and designed to help you get on the right foot after graduation and to advance you throughout your career.
With your involvement, I will establish a professional development committee to systematically survey your needs and to design and update an evolving three-tiered curriculum. This curriculum will be based on an innovative 11+1 concept where each tier will consist of 11 courses or workshops with SHPE accreditation and 1 certification workshop. These courses and workshops will be delivered at the three organizational levels:
- Chapter Level - Podcasts, webinars, and online courses that can be conveniently accessed and that are designed to ensure that recent graduates and emerging professionals succeed during the difficult first five years of their career.
- Regional Level - Face-to-face courses and workshops delivered by SHPE Certified instructors designed for the mid-level professional's success in a highly competitive global market.
- National Level - The tier 3 program will be focused on professionals with 7+ years of experience that have a high interest and potential for executive level positions. Included here are the familiar Professional Development Series, Management Growth Training, and the Executive Leadership Institute.
At the conference we will offer the Certification Seminars to complete a tier in addition to a series of high impact high relevance workshops and competitions.
I will also create the "SHPE Transcript" and easy access to your professional development records and credits as a way to conveniently track your progress.
INFRASTRUCTURE
I will focus on delivering high quality services through the SHPE National Office to help you obtain the full value of your membership. For example:
- To give the ability to connect into a powerful network of contacts anytime, anywhere.
- To provide a SHPE web site rich in timely and relevant information to keep you well informed on matters of membership, events of interest, job opportunities, and career advancement.
To achieve these goals it will be necessary to:
- Complete the transition to SHPE's new governance consisting of the NBOD, the CEO, the National Office, and our volunteers.
- Establish metrics to measure our progress and make them visible to all our constituents.
- Improve SHPE IT infrastructure for online member support (i.e., membership renewals, chapter reports, and conference registration).
- Provide online career opportunities at the national and at the local levels with job postings and resume submittal opportunities.
- Increase scholarship funding by expanding AHETEMS staff, increase grant writing efforts, and expand science camp programs.
- Establish an office in Washington, DC, in order to work closely with federal agencies for funding for SHPE programs, develop partnerships with various federal agencies, and influence Hispanic education policy at the national level.
SHPE GROWTH
I will significantly increase the size of our network through increased membership and make this network a powerful resource to each of the members. Being in SHPE will mean that you are well connected.
- I will push our professional membership to 10,000 by 2011. To this end, it will be necessary to focus our efforts on rapidly extending awareness of our brand (SHPE), attracting, developing, and retaining new and returning members.
- I will focus on Improving the skills and efficiency of our membership department.
- I will optimize new graduate retention efforts by improved student graduation tracking.
